Penang - The Heritage City
2019/09/19.
In this day, I and my classmates in Interior Architecture Design class were going to Penang to do site visit also to find Forgotten Culture which is essential for our project.
We were departing at 11am from Taylor's University with bus. The Lecturers who were accompanying us are Miss Aida and Sir Imran. It took approximately 4.5 hours include visiting the rest area.
As we entering Penang area, we could see that the Penang air is better than Kuala Lumpur area. There was only slight haze here. The first thing that we do after arrived at Penang was check-in the hotel which is Container Hotel with the room that we have chosen before.
After each of us check-in and put our luggage to the room, we were given 30 minutes to rest and prepare ourselves before exploring Sekeping Victoria.
Because I was bored and already prepared to go out, I and Silviena went around the hotel. We went to upstairs. It is a hotel lounge which has a unique interior design. There are two bookselves that made of steel bar. One of the bookshelves has a television in the middle and surrounded with the books. Most of the books are old books and its were arranged randomly. The lounge also has window glasses but is is covered with plants tha grow downhill.
After exploring the lounge, we move to the next place which are few shops across our hotel. One of the shops there was catching my eyes. It is postage shops but also selling coffee there. The exterior of the shop is unique and represent the old building in the past.
This store sells various kinds of postcards and most of it is about Penang and Malaysia. There also red mailbox in front of the shop so we can directly send our postcards. Other shops along that is mostly restaurant and biscuit store. Because there is nothing that attracts us more, we walked through the alley beside the postage store, there are 2 street arts which is susu soya seller and two kids playing the swing.
A lot of people are taking photos there, because I am too lazy too queue, so I went in to a passageway beside the street arts that has small booths there. Various kind of goods were sold there. Mostly the goods has cultural value on it.
The First Fading Culture that I found is Batu Seremban. It is a traditional Malaysian game which usually be played when we were children. This traditional game is played by throwing and catching the 'buah'. 'Buah' is a small pouch that is filled up with rice, seed or gravels. Usually played by the girls on the floor or terrace. I know this game because I ever watched this on Upin Ipin Cartoon Series and there is a scene where Mei-Mei plays Batu Seremban.
The next one is Painting on the wood. This activity is barely replacing the paper with wood as the medium. Painting on the wood is one of culture that has happened long time ago which is before 16th Century and be called Panel Painting. The painting itself mostly used as miniatures in illuminated manuscripts. This method is popular and be applied mostly in Greek and Rome. But after canvas was invented in 16th Century, this activity is barely be done anymore. The reason of it is because wood panels if kept too little humidity, often warp and crack with age.
After that, we directly went to Sekeping Serendah to visit awesome cafe. We walked to there because it is really close to our hotel. The exterior of the cafe look like a abandon building/old building. The door and cafe board made of rusty steel, not only that the wall is painted white but it has paint flake and some parts are showing the bricks without any plaster. Even though the exterior look like an abandon building, but there are few plants that planted there. So it kinda fuse the building and the natural plants.
As entering the cafe, we could see the interior part also has the old elements on it. As we can see the timber folding door that usually are attached on old house especially timber house.
The usage of ancient furniture also one of the highlight of this cafe. Like the wood cupboard behind the cashier, It has a really ancient style of cupboard with a fusion of wood and glass. But the unique of this cupboard is the curved part on one edge of the cupboard. This cafe also has high ceiling which emphasize and make the cafe look more spacious.
The table and chair is made of stainless steel with metal frame which is a simple material furnitures and usually be used in the past. The cafe also use rotan basket as their decoration by hanging it on the ceiling. These two furnitures also included in fading cultures because these days it really difficult to find rotan basket and table chair like it.
In Awesome Canteen, we explored and took few photos that might help us for project two. And because we were hungry, we ordered food here (even though what we eat is not Penang's local food, but it is okay, at least my stomach won't trumbling).
We visited the art gallery cafe that near Awesome Canteen and the cafe is super long which made us passed through various of design there.
We can see that the each design is completely different. As I was walking passage by passage, the interior of the cafe is combining every culture as there are room that full of ancient chinese furniture and after that will have a room that full of Malay decoration.
Tying red ribbon on the tree is also a Chinese culture that is fading. This culture came from small city called Zhujiajiao. Chinese believes red color symbolizes "good luck" and "joy". And those trees are believed as "Wishing Tree" that will grant our wishes. The higher the ribbon being tied, the more likely our wishes will come true.
But now, this kind of thing is rarely be done especially by the young generation. Most people do not believe this kind culture again, that is why this culture slowly fading.
After passing through Chinese themed cafe, I saw furniture that really rare to encounter in this modern era. It is Rotan Armchair with various colors. This chair also has unique shape which circular backrest. Usually this chair will use thin layer of rotan as the material for seat and backseat foam and later will be arranged or knitted to have certain pattern.
People right now rarely to use this kind of chair due to the durability of this chair. Because this rotan need a handle care especially with the humidity so it won't moldy quickly.
Beside this cafe there is a clothes store with unique interior design, they place few old stuff like typewriter, old fan and charcoal iron.
Charcoal iron is the iron that be used before the electric iron was invented. So we must put the heated charcoal inside the iron and we could use it to iron the clothes. This iron is already invented before 16th Century and the shape of this iron was made according to analogy of Victorian which is Heater Shield. This Iron no longer be used because it is not efficient to use. Another reason people don't use this anymore because it creates smoke and the smell of it sticks to the clothes. Also because this iron is heavy around 5-10 kgs, so it wasted a lot of energy.
Because we still got our free time, I and my team agreed to go to Street Art and Little India based on the Itienary that the lecturers gave.

As time passes by, when it was 6 pm, we decided to continue our exploration to Little India. With help from our uncle which is Uncle Google, we can arrive safely. We took stroll around to take photos and smell the spices of Indian cuisine. It is really all Indian culture because we kept hearing Indian songs.
About 30 minutes we rest, I and my friends wanted to try Hawker Night Stall at Lebuh Chulia Street and it could be reached with 10 minutes walk. Luckily Penang is not really crowd like KL, so we could across the street and walk safely.
When we arrived in the first stall, we could see so many people ordered food here and there which made us confuse which one that we should eat. Because we heard that Penang Famous Food is Char Kuey Teow, so we ordered one plate and sharing. We purposely ordered only one so that we could try another foods too.
The Kuey Teow is really tasty! It is really different from kuey teow in KL. After that we ordered mochi (glutinous rice) because Caroline never tried it and want to try it.
Actually we were trying to find laksa since it is a famous local food in Penang too, but we could nit find it in this stall so it is okay. It tastes so chewy and really fuse well with the peanut powder.
But don't know why we were full so we did not eat again, instead we walk around there and we walked to Love Lane Street where there is few bar and restaurants there. We found a Unique Art Gallery Shops that sells cute goods also postcards. Mostly what she sells is artsy stuff.
In this store, she sells art postcards that based on drawings and only sold in her store. Also in here, you can send the letter to the future. It means you will write a letter right now but that letter only be sent in future depends on when you want it to be sent.
Each postcard costs RM5 and if you want send it to future RM1 will be add-on as the service fee.
I know it is kinda expensive for a postcard but the postcard is really adorable and so artistic!!
Without realising time, we spent more than an hour in this store because we were so excited. After paying and writing letter, we wanted to go back to hotel since it was already 9.30 pm. On the way to hotel, we saw Ice Cendol Store and we also want to try Cendol in Penang, so we ate cendol first then go back to the hotel. The cendol is just so so and I assume the owner add coffee flavour since it tastes a bit of coffee.
So we ended up our first day in Penang with Cendol.
20/09/2019.
Second day in Penang. Today we have schedule to have a tour that has been included in our trip. So we will have walk tour and visit heritage site in Penang also we will get the history and explanation from the tour guide.
So we divided into 2 groups with each group 20 people. I was in Sir Imran Group and the woman tour guide. First we all gathered around St. George Church which is the oldest Anglican church in Southest Asia.
But the weather is having a little rain while we were gathering there. After everyone was there, the tour guide quickly started the tour with brief history of Penang. Penang is older than Malaysia that is why Penang is called heritage city.
After short explanation from her, we directly walk to Kong Hock Keong Temple which is temple for Cantonese and Hokkien. This Chinese culture of praying in the temple especially with praying stick is one of cultural beliefs. But now, not much people that believe on the stick and slowly forgetting about this culture.
After that we were heading to Little India to visit the Hinduism Temple. It is called Kuil Sri Mahamariamman. This is the oldest functioning Hindu Temple in Malaysia. It was been here before 19th Century. It was a private temple for Pillai Family, but now temple doors open to public.
And we are reminded to visit the temple before 12pm due to the praying time.

In the Little India, there is a famous food that called famosa and people should try it if come to Penang. Famosa is kind of food that being fried but there is filling inside.
And our last stop for this tour is Chew Jetty. Chew Jetty is a harbour but there are shops along it and the building there still maintaining their original condition which is ancient building one. There are also chinese ancient ornaments that are hung on the house.
The Chinese ornaments that being hung on the wall is Rotan Strayer. This element actually a Chinese cooking utilities which usually acts as a tray to put vegetables and fruits but this strayer can be used to watch the vegetables because it has the strainer. Not only that, in past times, people that worked as farmer used this to carry the crops from the farm. But along of the era where economics and social life is changing, people no longer used that as their daily utilities. So this strayer include in fading culture too.
After take a walk at Chew Jetty, we headed back to Jetty Food Court to have our lunch. I and Stella want to try the Laksa, so we ordered Laksa but sharing portion.
But unfortunately, the laksa and popiah is so disappointing and not tasty at all. :(
After having lunch, we planned to Asia Camera Museum, since we did not have enough time yesterday.
We walked about 15 minutes to reach the museum. The admission fee for each person is RM15.
In this museum, there will be so many cameras from each era. They also have the first camera!! And even some of the ancient cameras still can be used.
As we entered the museum, the staff follows us and explained each camera with the function. We also allowed to try the ancient camera. This is so fun!
We spent about 40 minutes here to take photo and tried a lot of vintage camera, then we went to Blue Mansion a.k.a Cheong Fatt Tze House. This is the most favorite mansion of Cheong Fatt Tze because it is his 7th wife house.
Since this is really an old house, there is a lot of old items that really interesting such as trishaw, ancient vase, wooden space divider, mahjong, etc.
After 45 minutes of tour in Blue Mansion, we went to eat cendol, but this time is the really famous one which is Teochew Famous Cendol in Jalan Pinang. Since I am really curious how delicious it is.
To find it, search for the iconic mural behind the cendol stall. AND IT IS REALY TASTY!! I can understand why so many people bought this (we are even have to queue to buy this)
It tastes sweet but has kinda savoury tastes in the end. One cendol has cendol jelly, red been, ice and the syrup of brown sugar.
One bowl like this costs RM3.20 which is average price for this.
Because after eating cendol, the time already showed at 5.30 pm, we were going back to container hotel since we have tutorial to discuss our subject matter for project 2.
It took about an hour for tutorial session for four of us. Since we already hungry and quite tired, we planned to have dinner rightaway. We were going to Kapitan Restaurant that Sir Imran recommends for us.
We ordered Cheese Garlic Naan with Chicken Milani. It tastes so tasty!! Really won't regret buying this, one day If I go to Penang again, I will go here and order this again.
Then after fulfilling our stomach, we went back to hotel to rest and packed up because we will be going back tomorrow.
21/09/2019.
Today is the last day in Penang. I woke up so early in morning around 5.40 am. Then I went to take a bath and packed my things. Actually I wanted to go to postcard stores across our hotel, it opens at 8 am. Because none if my friends woke up, I went there alone and bought few postcards. I also wrote a postcard to my father and sent it directly. It costs RM2.50 for each postcard and extra RM0.50 for the stamp to post the postcards.
Then I returned to hotel after it, some of my friends already woke up and took bath. We went for breakfast in RasaRasa which beside the postcard store. It sells few Malaysian foods, I ordered for Kaya Toast and Penang Coffee Milk.
Because yesterday we have not taken photo in Susu Soya Street Art, I and Alinda went there and took few photos.
I am so happy with this trip especially when I visited few heritage places and saw local cultures.
Personally I don't want this old cultures to be forgotten, even though some cultures is inefficient but millineal generations must not forget this to appreciate all efficient things that we have now. Because without this ancient cultures, we won't be able to enjoy all this efficient things.

Not only street art, but there are also few stores that sell Penang merchandise. All the buildings also still maintain their old design which make it more aesthetic also unique. There also has recycled goods that they made from unused items. Such as bicycle wheels that arranged as a gate and painted in black, and the chair seat that made of fabric leftovers. I can see their creative minds and how they maintain the heritage of their city.
After that we all went back to hotel since we already tired and want to rest briefly.
While walking back to the hotel, we saw there is a trishaw. Trishaw is a light three-wheeled vehicle with pedals that mostly in Asian. This also the culture element that slowly fading and only available in certain city. The reasons why is because human already invented car and motorcycle which is easier as trasnportation. Currently, mostly trishaw only be used as tourist attraction or entertainment. The other reason it is because in few country or city, trishaw is banned and probihited due to the hectic activities that happened in most major cities.
About 30 minutes we rest, I and my friends wanted to try Hawker Night Stall at Lebuh Chulia Street and it could be reached with 10 minutes walk. Luckily Penang is not really crowd like KL, so we could across the street and walk safely.
